What Is The UNOB Technique?

[Content] is a narrative description of a technique
Step (1)
Don't even attempt to write a complicated URL formula - just concatenate an anchor element to your standard image onload field (ie [-]) like this:

[iol] & "module.js" & [/iol]
&
"<a class='QBU_MyClass Vibrant Success'>Do Something Impressive</a>"

This formula will bootstrap the loading of module.js upon page load and essentially fill the real estate taken up by the [-] field with a nicely styled button. Note there is no href or event handler attributes on this anchor element. Attempting to add a href or event handler attribute through the formula language will only bring grief, sorrow and misery.

Step (2)
Within module.js simple place code that will detect and process click events on anchors with class QBU_MyClass like so:

$(".QBU_MyClass").on("click", function(event) {
  alert("Do Something Impressive");
});

You will have to place this code within appropriate page decode logic as specified in the generic module.js of the image onload technique template. If you need access to the [Record ID#] or other fields to implement your Something Impressive don't waste your time trying to pass these values through the QuickBase formula URL field. Doing so will only complicate your formula and encourage errors and typos. Instead, simply make an AJAX call within module.js to grab the field values you need to do Something Impressive.

Step (3)
There is no third step - you are done. Enjoy:

When you bring additional fields into a conversion, Quickbase often finds inconsistencies. For example, say you're converting your Companies column into its own table. One company, Acme Corporation, has offices in New York, Dallas and Portland. So, when you add the City column to the conversion, Quickbase finds three different locations for Acme. A single value in the column you're converting can only match one value in any additional field. Quickbase needs you to clean up the extra cities before it can create your new table. To do so, you have one of two choices:

  • If you want to create three separate Acme records (Acme-New York, Acme-Dallas and Acme-Portland) click the Conform link at the top of the column.
  • If the dissimilar entries are mistakes (say Acme only has one office in New York and the other locations are data-entry errors) go back into your table and correct the inconsistencies—in this case, changing all locations to New York. Then try the conversion again.
